A lot of my friends and clients tell me that they don’t have the time to exercise or maybe you can’t find the time to do something for yourself that you’ve been wanting to do. Well, I believe that we all have the same 24 hours in a day, it’s just the way you use them that determines your success. I’m a big believer in using a to-do list and to that end I found a new program that makes creating and using a to-do list to organize your life much easier. It’s both IOS and Android compatible and will synchronize across all your devices. It’s called Nozbe.
As a strong proponent of daily to-do lists, I have found that they organize my life and make me more productive by reminding me of the things I need to accomplish each day over the course of a month or even your New Year’s goals. I have used several other apps/programs in the past for my to-do list but now that I’ve found Nozbe, I’ll be staying with it from now on.
In Nozbe they have several ways to keep you on track and organized. Let’s look at how you could use Nozbe for a long-term goal first. Say, you want to set the goal of losing weight. As we’ve all been taught, a good goal must be specific to work so we need to give that goal a specific number and time frame. So, let’s change it from a general losing weight to I will lose 20 pounds and 3 dress sizes by the end of this year (December 31st). To reach this goal we’ll need to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise a minimum of 5 days per week. Now, let’s see how Nozbe can help us set up a plan.
First, we’ll create a “Project” in Nozbe called Exercise. In the description you write about your vision or overall goal, exercise/weight loss. This will be a motivating force for you.
In this project we’ll create a new Task called “Success”. Write something great and rewarding in the comment and make it really motivating for you as it will be your reward when you’ve accomplished your goal. Set the “Repeat” parameter at every half year and mark it as completed. It will reappear on your task and priority list in 6 months but for now it’s invisible to not clutter your project.
Now set your first Milestone. Create a “Milestone” or “Progress Review” task in your Exercise project. It can be something like lose 5 inches overall or lose 5 pounds. Set the date parameter to a date one month from now and set the Repeat parameter to every 4 weeks and then tick off the task as done. Now it will show up in your priority list in a month when you’ll take your first measurement Progress Review.
For everyday tasks, say a 30 minute exercise session (you can even name a specific exercise program) 5 days a week. Create a task in your Exercise project on the days and types of exercise you want to do. Set the date parameters to which 5 days you chose and the time you want to do it – say 7:00am. For the time needed select 30 minutes and use the green star to make it a priority. Enable the notifications in Nozbe and your phone and you’ll get a notification/reminder from Nozbe 30 minutes before at 6:30am. Do your workout and at the end of that day’s workout mark it as done and set it up for the next week on the same day of the week. Or, if you want to see how much you’ve accomplished, delete the date and it will keep them in your task list to have in front of you everyday. It might be motivating to see how much you’ve accomplished. No matter which method you choose, repeat the procedure every day.
You’ll make amazing progress when you are consistent but if you have to skip one session don’t stress out. Just get back on your schedule. After one month, your recurring “milestone” task will appear on your Priority list. You’ll see there how far you’ve come. If you didn’t meet your goal, analyze what kept you from it and how you can change that the next month. Next, write another milestone in your Milestone task and a new comment or goal for the next month. Mark that task as done and it will reappear next month.
After 6 months achieving 6 milestones, you should be really close to your big goal that you set at the beginning. At this time your “Success” task will appear on your task list and who knows – maybe you wrote something really nice there or promised yourself a great reward.
Nozbe is a paid app and it runs $10 a month ($120 per year) or you get a discount if you pay for it all annually at $96.
